The Father of Cymbals
Murat Diril
Murat Diril was born in 1974 near Trabzon on the Black Sea coast — the region where the very first hand-made Turkish cymbals were forged. He learned the centuries-old craft from the masters Mehmet Tamdeker and Agop Tomurcuk in Istanbul.
Between 2000 and 2006 he forged more than 100,000 cymbals for Meinl: the Byzance and MB20 lines. From 2006 to 2008 he developed the Twenty series for Paiste, unveiled at NAMM 2007. Then he founded his own workshop in Samsun — and chose craft over quantity.
Today he runs the manufactory together with his daughter. Every cymbal that leaves the workshop has passed through his hands.
